Hot Spot

Almost all the walls inside Hot Spot are covered with colored cartoon sketches of different characters and posters from Hollywood and Lollywood cinema. Hollywood comic books also make a cameo appearance or two on these walls. The sketches and comic book strips are supplemented with witty and sarcastic lines and signify outrageous contradictions. Beside the entrance door, there are fixed rubber sculptures, including a dinosaur, beaks of ferocious birds, and a horrible creature I cannot quite place.

On the ground floor, a number of refrigerated compartments close to the counter display various flavors of ice cream including Pistachio, Banoffee, Madagascar Vanilla, and Red Velvet etc., for temptation’s sake. On the other side, close to the ice cream, a variety of cakes are also exhibited for interested customers. Behind the display compartments, where the waiter sits, is a pasted list of beverages, such as Whipped Coffee, Cappuccino, and Café Mocha, along with different fruit shakes. For customers on the ground floor, Hot Spot has placed few marble tables surrounded by black iron chairs. On the first floor and in the basement, there are yellow wooden benches (uncomfortable ones) with marble tables interspersed between them.

I ordered myself two scoops of ‘Strawberry Yogurt’ and ‘Nutella’ each. The man at the counter, who prepared my receipt brought it to my table. I gobbled down the first few spoons too hastily, and had to close my eyes as the cream introduced my dental nerves to somersaulting sensations. I started off with the Strawberry scoop and enjoyed every bite. Then, I alternated my spoons between Nutella and Strawberry and was amused by how the two diverse flavors confused my taste buds. Meanwhile, ‘Riders on the Storm’ played in the background, the rhythmic beat and the storm in background made me thump my feet gently. Of the two flavors that I tried, strawberry was delectable, while Nutella fell just short of satisfying me, although I could not pinpoint exactly what was missing.

While sitting there for a good while, I noticed how only young people ranging from 19 to 28 appeared in groups and alone. Perhaps the cinematic ambiance appeals to the young and happens to be too loud for the married people. I could feel that the place was throbbing, or better, trembling gently with excitement. Although the ice-cream was fine, I found it over-priced, which its physical location in one of the luxurious areas of Lahore alone could justify. Hot Spot is for chilln’ , that much is clear to see.
