Green Smoothie: The Perfect Mix
My childhood contempt for veggies has transformed into a love for them and this is all thanks to my newfound ability to drink them. Yes, you read that right! While I now crave my daily fix of greens, this wasn’t always the case.. I can recall the intensity with which my grandmother attempted to convert me to a herbivore but her pleas fell on deaf ears. If she could see me now guzzling my green smoothie, she would be so proud.
Green Smoothie: The Trend
Many fitness junkies have hyped up this plant powered health trend and my brekky routine never misses out on this particular food fad. The green smoothie trend is backed up by genuine nutritive cred. The daily intake of this thick concoction makes me feel like I’m doing wonders for my body with every sip.
Unlike Juices, smoothies are an excellent way to benefit from the entirety of a fruit or vegetable, fiber and all. The nutrient-rich sips contribute a host of benefits. From sweeping out hazardous toxins, promoting natural weight loss and glowing skin and also improved energy throughout the day; there is very little that a green smoothie won’t do for you.
The Taste
There isn’t any set rule to create an uber nutritious green energy booster. The key to avoiding a smoothie-fails is the proper proportion of each element, nobody wants to end up with a grassy slurry.
The Magic Formula
Recipe books and the internet are chock full of green smoothie recipes. Try not to feel overwhelmed. A simple combination of fresh leafy greens like spinach, celery, kale, or parsley, a flavourful fruit like a banana, pineapple, berries, or mango, and a liquid base like water, almond milk, coconut milk, or coconut water is all it takes! You can try out various mixes of these basics and create a multitude of amazing flavors.
Blending it up
My go-to green smoothie recipe goes a little something like this:
2 sliced bananas (frozen or fresh)
½ cup berries or strawberries
1 to 2 celery sticks
½ cup baby spinach leaves (If you’re feeling adventurous, swap out baby spinach for a different choice of leafy greens)
1 cup of coconut water or plain water
1 cup of ice
Put the liquid base in first. Then add greens followed by adding the fruit chunks. Start gently and keep the blender speed on low, gradually raising it towards high to get a desirable consistency. Lastly, add in the ice cubes and give it a quick blitz. The stellar green smoothie is ready to serve!
Be prepared for ample requests asking you to reveal the secret behind your glowing skin and banging body. You’re welcome.
